There was a brief episode in the eighties when shotguns were regarded as a symbol of poverty and inadequate in terms of housing, but as anyone can see, they can be quite elegant! Thankfully this mode of thought has dissipated and seems that for the most part, people have come to their senses. It's nice to see some pride and recognition for the early working classes, and there are zillions of beautifully up-kept shotguns in the States.

The shotgun name is derived from the shape of the brackets which hold up the cantilevered roofs over the front porches. The long gun shape has the deep shoulder butt at the front wall and the muzzle of the gun (bracket) at the extremity of the roof. It is a picturesque analogy. The people of New Orleans are very proud and protective of their distinctive heritage of simple workers homes. Would that we Quebecers would be as proud and protective of what have in the way of the simple homes of our early industrial workers. See the illegal demolition of 226-228 rue Grant in Longueuil last weekend.

Say a word for the much maligned Laurentien Hotel. Sorry to see you go..!
The big building behind the White Rose sign is the old YWCA. It was preserved when the Hotel was built.
If I remember correctly, the high windows lit a wonderful indoor swimming pool. Great memories....

Pouvez-vous me renseigner?

Un grand merci de votre attention,

Wow! I say, not only is it the way that children were meant to play, but the benefits as precursors to formal types of participation are phenomenal! Finding freedom to take risks, and to make and unmake playworlds.... This reminds me of my own childhood: A little clump of bushes, smaller than this wooded city-block, was a place where friends, some imaginary, came for tea, served in leafy cups with twiggy utensils. Crossing the large park to go to the Library and on the way back at night making a fire to roast potatoes. That was an urban adventure that we had thanks to my father. He'll be 92 in June!

My brother Kevin, sister Pat and I were with The Little Players of the Air for several years. Each Saturday morning it would be broadcast over radio station CJAD from 1191 Mountain Street. The program was aired live a few times a year from the stages of the Monkland and Rialto Theatres where we would follow the program with the performance of a variety show. Movies would then follow - all for the bargain price of 34 cents. My siblings and I made direct-to-disc recordings (that I still have) at Miss Sheehy's rehearsal studio above a hardware store on Queen Mary Road. J. Arthur DuPont (CJAD) promised Miss Sheehy a radio show if he ever got his radio broadcasting license - which he obviously did.
By the way, the space above the Empress Tearoom was home to an acting school where Michael Sarrazin studied. I got to know him a bit and later on we occasionally played at the same gigs in different bands. He was a pretty good drummer.

HI, I am the author of Traces of the Past-Montreal's Early Synagogues.
Shearith Israel, otherwise known as the Spanish and Portuguese Synagogue remained at 1445 Stanley Street location until 1947 when it relocated to its present location in Snowdon at 4894 St. Kevin. It was the Shaar Hashomayim that moved from its downtown location at 1320 McGill College Avenue in 1922 to its present location in Westmount on Cote St. Antoine and Kennsington. It is also important to note that the Shearith Israel was the first synagogue established in all of Canada in 1768 and one of the earliest congregations in all of North America. Interestingly, its establishment also predated the founding of the first Protestant church in Montreal.

Just a comment on the photo. Americans downtowns are so clean, perfect and nice. Even parking garages are spotless. Sidewalks are wider and white! No asphalt patches or anything like that. I hear stories about how Americans used to marvel at how clean and nice Toronto and Montreal were 15 years ago compared to American cities. I wonder when it started being the opposite. At least our cities are more vibrant and safer, but I can't help but being a litter jealous.
