Is urban agriculture a fad?

Based on the history of urban agriculture in North America, it would be appear not. Although it has only recently started to make headlines, urban agriculture (UA) has arguably always existed - insofar as humans have engaged in food production in and immediately around their settlements ever since they started to settle.
