reminiscent of a bagel version of 'Surly Duff'.

Most mascots at least pretend to be an animal. A mascot made from an inanimate object is always going to be creepier.

You find him disturbing because he IS disturbing. No need to think about that one too much. Creepy is creepy.

I had my picture taken with him last summer during the 50th anniversary celebrations they were having. It was the single greatest moment of my life!
